LOOKING BACK AT LAST WEEK
RELIGION – In Lesson 4 we learned that we are to act as images of God, and how we can become more like God when we choose to follow the Commandments. When we follow the Commandments, we are acting as God acts and we become better images of God.
Virtue of the Month: Faith – believing in God and all He has revealed
Saint of the Month: Saint Martha
MATH – We had a busy week taking our Chapter 2 Review Test, Chapter 2 Assessment Test, and the Cumulative Review for Chapters 1 & 2. I’m pleased to say they did very well.
LANGUAGE ARTS – In Unit 1, Lesson 3 we isolated sounds in words and generated words with initial and final p, l, o and b sounds. Our Read Aloud stories this week were The Little School Bus by Carol Roth and What Will I Be? by Jill Johnson. Reading skills that we worked on included: comprehension, making and confirming predictions, sequencing, and language use. We practiced identifying singular and plural nouns. We read decodable books 14-18 and they went home daily. I hope they continue to read them to you at home!
HANDWRITING: We learned that some letters and numerals have lines that are straight up and down, and that some letters and numerals have slide lines. We practiced writing vertical and horizontal lines.
SCIENCE – We read and discussed the skills used for basic scientific inquiry. We learned about what scientists do and how they learn new things. We learned that the steps of the scientific method are:
1) Ask a question.
2) Learn as much as you can about it.
3) Come up with a hypothesis (a big word for 1st graders!)
3) Do experiments to test what you believe.
5) Write down what you found out.
6) Tell others what your learned.
We did our first science experiment too! We wanted to see what would happen if we mixed pop rocks inside soda. We poured a package of pop rocks into a balloon and then stretched it over a soda bottle. We emptied the pop rocks into the soda and waited patiently to see what would happen. The balloon on the soda bottle inflated! It was a fun and easy experiment. Just perfect for first graders!
